Israel army says Gaza attack tunnel found near border

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli soldiers discovered a tunnel leading from Gaza into southern Israel on Monday, a statement from the military said.

The army said that the shaft of a "terror tunnel" was found during routine activity adjacent to the security fence in south Gaza.

The incident, including assessing when the tunnel was built, is currently being reviewed, the statement said, adding that the tunnel "indicates the intent to execute terror attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers on Israeli territory," and is considered very serious.

Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza in June 2007 after Hamas took full control of the territory. The border closure includes a ban on imports of building materials, which has prevented reconstruction from Israeli offensives on the territory.
