Miami-based Venezuelans to vote in New Orleans

MIAMI (AP) ? By bus and car, commercial flight and charter, U.S.-based Venezuelans are traveling en masse to New Orleans in the coming days, spending hundreds of dollars and in some cases more than a day of their time to cast a vote in their country's presidential election.

The government of President Hugo Chavez earlier this year closed the country's consulate in Miami, where most Venezuelans living in the U.S. have cast ballots in the past. It later said voters would have to travel to New Orleans if they want to participate on Oct. 7.

It's a hardship in terms of time and money for many potential voters. But some, especially those who want to stop Chavez from being re-elected after 13 years in power, are determined to make the trip anyway.

Carolina Guevara, a 21-year-old college student, plans to take the 15-hour bus ride from Miami to the Louisiana capital, an 870-mile (1,400-kilometer) trek.

"We want to demonstrate to the government that even if they put obstacles in our path, we will practice our right to vote," said Guevara, who hopes to return to Venezuela after completing her political science studies at Miami Dade College.

The Venezuelan government closed its Miami mission after the State Department expelled consul Livia Acosta amid an investigation into recordings that seemed to implicate her in an Iranian plot for a cyber-attack against the U.S.

The closure affected nearly 20,000 Venezuelan voters living in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina who had registered to vote at the Miami consulate. Most Venezuelan voters in the United States live in the Miami area and the vast majority of those are critical of the Chavez government.

After the Miami mission closed, Venezuelan election officials said that voters registered there would have to cast ballots in New Orleans, where the next-nearest consulate is located. Venezuelan opposition leaders accused the government of trying to disenfranchise voters, a charge officials denied.

"They tried to do everything possible to prevent us from voting," said Gisela Parra, a former judge who left Venezuela in 2005 after being accused of conspiring against Chavez. "The pressure was such that they had to open a voting center far away, in New Orleans. It's like punishing us."

Parra, who plans to volunteer at the New Orleans voting center, said Venezuelan electoral officials "had the obligation" to make another Miami location available.

But Tibisay Lucena, president of Venezuela's Elections Council, countered that voters registered in Miami "were relocated using the same criteria used inside the country, telling them to go to the nearest polling station."

About 15,800 Venezuelans in the U.S. voted in their country's Dec. 2006 presidential election, three-quarters of them in Miami.

Of the 10,800 Venezuelans voting in Florida, 98 percent cast ballots for the opposition candidate and 2 percent for Chavez. Thirty-four percent of registered voters did not participate, according to figures from Venezuela's Elections Council.

Most Venezuelans in the U.S. are professionals or businesspeople who left their country after Chavez became president in 1999. The number of Venezuelans in the U.S. burgeoned from 91,500 in 2000 to 215,000 in 2010, according to the 2010 Census, with 57 percent of them living in Florida.

Numerous groups surfaced to assist U.S.-based Venezuelan voters, with information distributed on the Internet and social media, as well as at coffee shops and bookstores frequented by Venezuelans.

The groups include Voto Joven and Voto Donde Sea, comprised mostly of young people, and the Mesa de la Unidad Democratica, or Democratic Unity Table, a coalition of political parties backing opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles.

Beatriz Olavarria, who leads a commission created by the opposition alliance to distribute voter information and mobilize observers, said she hopes at least half of the voters registered in Miami will cast ballots in New Orleans. "Something tells me that many people will get on board at the last minute," she said.

Olavarria, who has volunteered in Miami during past Venezuelan elections, created the website www.Miami7octubre.com, to provide information about the New Orleans vote.

The group's major push now is figuring out how to get registered voters to the Louisiana city, where balloting will be held in a convention center. Opposition members complain that voting will not occur inside the mission itself, but Lucena, the electoral council president, said "the rules state that the polling center must be as near as possible to a consulate."

In most cases, traveling from here to New Orleans to vote would require at least one night away from home.

With travel costs a major obstacle for many potential voters, financial adviser Andres Casanova and his childhood friend Andres Morrison are collecting donations to pay for charter planes to ferry Venezuelans to New Orleans.

So far, they have received almost $355,700 in donations, enough to pay for trips for 1,100 voters. But far more people ? as many as 3,000 ? have registered on the organization's website, www.aerovotar.com , for seats assigned on a first-come, first- served basis.

Voto Donde Sea, meanwhile, is collecting donations to subsidize bus fares for voters, said group leader Vanessa Duran.

Milagros and Fernando Nunez Noda are renting a car with another couple to make the trip from Miami.

"We're going no matter what," said Nunez Noda, a journalist and businessman.

"It's like they threw down a challenge," he said of the government's decision to move the balloting to New Orleans. "We will prove our strength."

The Morning Orange: Baseball wafts (a bit) in the heart (Henderson's) of the Syracuse football season

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University football team is fully one-third of its way through the regular season. With Pittsburgh due in the Carrier Dome in six days, the start of the Orange?s Big East Conference campaign looms. There is much work to be done between now and the earning of any bowl-game berth.

But still . . .

Have you seen what?s going on in the American League? There are five playoff berths available in that thing, and there are just five games left for each of the contenders . . . and nothing has been decided.

Texas (92-65) . . . New York (91-66) . . . Baltimore (90-67) . . . Oakland (88-68) . . . Los Angeles (87-70) . . . Tampa Bay (86-71) . . . Detroit (84-73) . . . Chicago (83-74). On this last weekend of September, all eight of those towns -- and the AL clubs that play in them -- are still very much alive. Which means, if you recall what the St. Louis Cardinals did a year ago, that each is still in position to land in the World Series.

? MLB scoreboard, schedule | ? MLB standings

So, what does any of this have to do with Syracuse football? Perhaps only this: One of Doug Marrone?s assistants who has actually allowed himself an interest in something beyond Xs and Os is keeping tabs.

Uh huh. Donnie Henderson, SU?s defensive backs coach, is a baseball guy. And as he grew up in southern California playing the game with Ozzie Smith and Eddie Murray -- both of whom would eventually wend their way into the Baseball Hall of Fame -- perhaps he can?t be blamed.

So, he is a fan. And as he does work for a man, Marrone, who played baseball, himself, in high school and remains a devotee of the Yankees, he may be fairly well-placed in the college football universe.

?Oh, I?ll talk baseball any time,? Henderson will tell you. ?I love it.?

He?ll also confess to his admiration of that fella for whom the month we?re about to enter was so special.

?Reggie Jackson was my guy,? said Henderson. ?It was the demeanor. He always had the confidence. Reggie was a little outspoken, yeah. He walked with that swagger. He was labeled as ?Mr. October,? and he had to live with that. You?re ?Mr. October.? You go up against Billy Martin all the time. Who?s going to in? Yeah, he was my guy.?

Funny, but Jackson played for four of the teams still alive in the AL ? in order, the Athletics, Orioles, Yankees and Angels. So, his fingerprints, even if they've long since faded, might still be on this pennant race, if only poetically.

And so, who knows? Maybe that has made Henderson even more invested. Subliminally, if nothing else.

(In addition to his columns and "To The Point" observations, Bud Poliquin will begin virtually every morning, seven days per week, with an 8 a.m. offering of some kind or another on the Syracuse University football program. Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The surrounding mystery of the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

Bioengineers introduce 'Bi-Fi' -- The biological 'Internet'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? If you were a bacterium, the virus M13 might seem innocuous enough. It insinuates more than it invades, setting up shop like a freeloading houseguest, not a killer. Once inside it makes itself at home, eating your food, texting indiscriminately. Recently, however, bioengineers at Stanford University have given M13 a bit of a makeover.

The researchers, Monica Ortiz, a doctoral candidate in bioengineering, and Drew Endy, PhD, an assistant professor of bioengineering, have parasitized the parasite and harnessed M13's key attributes -- its non-lethality and its ability to package and broadcast arbitrary DNA strands -- to create what might be termed the biological Internet, or "Bi-Fi." Their findings were published online Sept. 7 in the Journal of Biological Engineering.

Using the virus, Ortiz and Endy have created a biological mechanism to send genetic messages from cell to cell. The system greatly increases the complexity and amount of data that can be communicated between cells and could lead to greater control of biological functions within cell communities. The advance could prove a boon to bioengineers looking to create complex, multicellular communities that work in concert to accomplish important biological functions.

Medium and message

M13 is a packager of genetic messages. It reproduces within its host, taking strands of DNA -- strands that engineers can control -- wrapping them up one by one and sending them out encapsulated within proteins produced by M13 that can infect other cells. Once inside the new hosts, they release the packaged DNA message.

The M13-based system is essentially a communication channel. It acts like a wireless Internet connection that enables cells to send or receive messages, but it does not care what secrets the transmitted messages contain.

"Effectively, we've separated the message from the channel. We can now send any DNA message we want to specific cells within a complex microbial community," said Ortiz, the first author of the study.

It is well-known that cells naturally use various mechanisms, including chemicals, to communicate, but such messaging can be extremely limited in both complexity and bandwidth. Simple chemical signals are typically both message and messenger -- two functions that cannot be separated.

"If your network connection is based on sugar then your messages are limited to 'more sugar,' 'less sugar,' or 'no sugar'" explained Endy.

Cells engineered with M13 can be programmed to communicate in much more complex, powerful ways than ever before. The possible messages are limited only by what can be encoded in DNA and thus can include any sort of genetic instruction: start growing, stop growing, come closer, swim away, produce insulin and so forth.

Rates and ranges

In harnessing DNA for cell-cell messaging the researchers have also greatly increased the amount of data they can transmit at any one time. In digital terms, they have increased the bit rate of their system. The largest DNA strand M13 is known to have packaged includes more than 40,000 base pairs. Base pairs, like 1s and 0s in digital encoding, are the basic building blocks of genetic data. Most genetic messages of interest in bioengineering range from several hundred to many thousand base pairs.

Ortiz was even able to broadcast her genetic messages between cells separated by a gelatinous medium at a distance of greater than 7 centimeters.

"That's very long-range communication, cellularly speaking," she said.

Down the road, the biological Internet could lead to biosynthetic factories in which huge masses of microbes collaborate to make more complicated fuels, pharmaceuticals and other useful chemicals. With improvements, the engineers say, their cell-cell communication platform might someday allow more complex three-dimensional programming of cellular systems, including the regeneration of tissue or organs.

"The ability to communicate 'arbitrary' messages is a fundamental leap -- from just a signal-and-response relationship to a true language of interaction," said Radhika Nagpal, professor of computer science at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, who was not involved in the research. "Orchestrating the cooperation of cells to form artificial tissues, or even artificial organisms is just one possibility. This opens a door to new biological systems and solving problems that have no direct analog in nature."

Ortiz added: "The biological Internet is in its very earliest stages. When the information Internet was first introduced in the 1970s, it would have been hard to imagine the myriad uses it sees today, so there's no telling all the places this new work might lead."

Facebook Updates Messenger For iOS With New Chat UI, iOS 6 And iPhone 5 Support

Facebook just launched a new version of its Messenger app for iOS. Messenger, the company?s stand-alone chat app, got a bit of a user interface refresh with this update, as well as a speed boost and official support for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5?s larger display. Today?s update comes just a bit more than a week after Facebook also launched an update to its Messenger app for Android and, for the most part, this update brings the iOS app?s design on par with the Android app.

The conversation view, for example, now uses chat bubbles, which make the app look more like a text messaging app like Apple?s own iMessage. The previous version, as our own Sarah Perez pointed out when she reviewed the Android update, looked more like your email inbox.

In addition, the iOS app now brings up a list of all of your friends who are currently online when you swipe to the left. From there, you can now also easily pin those friends you talk to the most to the top of your Favorites list.

One feature that?s missing from the iOS app, though, is the ability to text with your contacts from within Messenger. It?s worth noting, however, that only a few Android devices currently support this feature.

Here is the full changelog:

What?s New in Version 2.0

- Swipe left anywhere in the app to quickly see who?s available and send a message
- Add friends you message most to the top of your Favorites
- New design for conversations
- Improved speed and reliability
- Support for iOS 6 and iPhone 5
- Bug fixes

Consider Timely Steps To Protect Your House From Pests | Home ...

Pests are most unwelcome visitors to your residence and company premise. A number of the pests are only a nuisance. Some of them are scary but not very harmful. Some others are dangerous for your family members and visitors and might even be carriers of significant illnesses, like, plague. Some versions of pests are damaging to your home and may perhaps bring about colossal damage if pest manage measures aren?t taken in time.

You can find a lot of types of pests. Some of them (as an example, bugs) are pretty little in size, although a number of them like, rats and possums are big sized. The harm they will bring about is usually unrelated to their dimension. Termites, as an example, are modest sized ants but they result in colossal damage for the home mainly because they assault wooden buildings and furnishings. If left unattended for a long interval they are able to even lead to structural failures in picket properties, even for the extent of creating collapse on the building. Evidently, termite harm greatly minimizes the resale worth of a constructing.

Rats, possums and squirrels in addition to being a nuisance result in irritating appears and disturb rest. Rats and mice can be carriers of critical diseases, like, plague, leptospirosis and lassa fever. Some pests, for example, wasps, bees and scorpions have poisonous bites, which in certain circumstances, like, scorpion bites may be pretty agonizing as well as deadly. However, most species of pests seldom assault humans, unless they may be disturbed.

They may be several strategies of pest control based upon the character of pests. Most people believe that chemical sprays are the only strategies of controlling pests. It have to be pointed out that chemical sprays or fumigation might be harming for the atmosphere. Hence, environment helpful methods of pest manage, like, entry obstacles to deny pests entry to your home, maintaining poisoned baits in regions exactly where pest focus is heavy, pest traps can also be efficient apart from becoming environmentally secure. Obviously, this kind of control techniques vary quite considerably from one kind of pest to an additional.

In case of industrial institutions, pests can not only damage constructing, furniture fittings and paper information. They?re able to impact the reputation of the enterprise. For example, pests can keep visitors absent as not numerous visitors would like to stop by pest infested areas, like, accommodations, restaurants, places of work as well as hospitals. On the other hand, pest control actions might be easier to take in commercial institutions, like, workplaces, which remain shut on weekends and vacations, which might be utilized for fumigation.

Do it oneself (Do-it-yourself) strategy, may well not be the ideal strategy in managing pests. Modern day day daily life will not leave much time for you to devote to pest manage in houses, let by yourself business institutions. Employing a business pest manage business, that has the requisite competence for endeavor the pest manage operate, is generally a far better option. Needless to say, just before employing a pest control agency a due diligence has to become carried out for examining license standing of the organization, as also, its accreditation status with critical users. It?s also essential to make sure the agency has adequate knowledge in applying environmentally friendly procedures for pest control. ? ?

9 Sexy (and STRONG) Halloween Costume Ideas - The Lingerie ...

Peacock Mask by Tutu Gorgeous Girl

It?s that time again: the spookiest, sexiest, sugariest night of the year is almost upon us!

Halloween is THE BEST holiday. ?When else do we get a chance to bodily inhabit any fantasy we can dream up?? AND have fun with friends and family? AND eat candy? It?s distinct from other major American holidays because (at least in the way it?s celebrated in modern times) it?s inclusive; you don?t need to be a particular religion, nationality, gender, age, or to have a family or partner to enjoy the best things about it. True, it?s origin may have been a little different, but I?ll leave that tale to an historian instead of a lingerie designer.

It?s a night of lighthearted fun ? of surprise, delight, hijinks and gorging on candy.? But it?s also a night to think, at least a little, about how we women own and don?t own our bodies and our sexuality in day-to-day culture and life ? and how we can choose to shake up our body identities for one night.? On Halloween, even if we are not consciously engaging in debates about gender politics, or necessarily making our choices based on philosophy, all of us who dress up are faced on some level with the woman-specific question: to slut or not to slut.

When did Halloween become such a flesh fest?? According to a Slate article, the 1970?s.

Ever since the Victorians started gallivanting around at costume balls in the 19th Century, the holiday has been a costume event for children and adults.? But it wasn?t until New York City?s gay men threw the first big, fun, drag-filled Halloween parade in 1973 that the modern risque version of the holiday was born.? Now, THAT?S an origin story I love to tell.

Retailers of course soon realized the commercial opportunity, and now, forty years later, any nice suburban lady need only Google ?sexy nurse costume? to have forty busty, garter-belted options to buy.

Every year on Halloween I look around the streets of New York City, and I think, ?A leotard and spike heels is not a costume!?And neither are boobs!? Boobs are not a costume!?? I have mixed feelings about these women who choose to wear their sexuality AS their disguise for the night.? I equally question our culture that seems to encourage us into the Madonna/whore dichotomy of womanhood?so that we feel pressure to be buttoned up all year and then overflow in this one-night-only explosion of cleavage and fishnets.

Actually, scratch all this.? Maybe my main objection to these hypersexy interpretations of ?Halloween costume? is not as a woman, but as a fashion designer. ?Dressing up as ?Sexy? instead of as [fill in the blank] is a giant missed sartorial opportunity on Halloween night. Why not be both? ?Wear something that someone designed to look like SOMETHING other than sex. ?Look sexy and strong, or sexy and funny, or sexy and unique?or be a sexy monster (see below)!

A lot of the costume business overlaps with the lingerie world.? It makes sense that lingerie companies design and manufacture costumes since they already have expertise in the construction of related silhouettes.? So I thought I would troll the world of sexy costumes to come up with some recommendations that are sexy and strong. (Eds. Note: Click the photos to be taken to the costumes directly.)

Who?s hotter than Wonder Woman!?? I would love the chance to inhabit a superhero?s superworld for the night.? Comfy microfiber fabric, plus the slimming effects of a corseted top, PLUS the shimmer factor that I can?t get enough of?.this one is one of my faves.

Finally, Halloween is the perfect opportunity for all you DIYers to practice your craft!? Here are some inspirational pictures and tips.

Nothing would inspire me more to strut my gorgeous self than this beautiful Peacock inspired tutu.? Carrie, who owns TutuGorgeousGirl on Etsy, has both girls? and women?s sizes.? I would pair this tutu with a leotard and mask (see photo at top of article), and accent it all with some bright baubles.

If you?re feeling ambitious, you can find a lot of home sewing patterns for all kinds of cool costumes, from crayons to wenches. Two of my favorite pattern companies are Simplicity and Butterick.

I?m a fan of this steampunk pattern.? Making a boned bustier and structured bolero would be a great accomplishment this Halloween.

And if you want to remember the origins of Hallow?s Eve, try out this sexy, mini-skirted witch!

And most of all, have fun!

I would love to hear your thoughts about what ?sexy? means on Halloween. Even after writing this article, I am stumped this year about what I should be.? Please help with tips, suggestions, and your own Halloween stories!

Victim 1 in Jerry Sandusky trial has book deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? A key witness against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.

Ballantine Bantam Dell said that "Silent No More: Victim (hash)1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," is coming out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim's mother and psychologist and "will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky's actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse," Ballantine announced.

Victim 1, now 18, will reveal his identity on the day of the book's release in an interview with ABC's Chris Cuomo.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. But Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., plans a donation to a charity for victims of child abuse.

Sandusky allegedly fondled Victim 1 and performed oral sex on him multiple times. Victim 1 first alerted authorities in 2008 and helped launch the investigation leading to Sandusky's conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors said some of the assaults took place on the Penn State campus.

Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.

Senior ally of former Ivory Coast president re-arrested in Ghana

(Reuters) - Interpol agents in Ghana have rearrested a senior ally of former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo amid a deepening dispute that has led to the closure of the border between the two West African neighbors, his lawyer said late on Friday.

Ivorian authorities are seeking the extradition of Justin Kone Katinan, a former budget minister, who was first arrested in Ghana last month during a wave of deadly attacks in Ivory Coast that the government there blamed on pro-Gbagbo exiles.

A court in Ghana's capital Accra granted his release on bail on Tuesday, but Katinan's lawyer said he had been arrested again at his home on Friday afternoon.

"They picked him at about 5 pm (1.00 p.m. EDT) and sent him to the Interpol wing (of the police)," Patrick Sogbodjor, the lawyer, said, adding that he was worried his client could be summarily extradited to Ivory Coast.

"That should not happen without going to court. It is not the right way, however, it can happen," he told Reuters.

Ivory Coast shut its border with Ghana a week ago, saying that gunmen who attacked police and army installations in the Ivorian border town of Noe had crossed over from Ghanaian territory.

Katinan is being sought on one of around two dozen international arrest warrants issued by the government of President Alassane Ouattara last year following a brief war that killed more than 3,000 people.

The violence erupted after Gbagbo refused to accept Ouattara's internationally recognized victory in an election in late 2010.

While Gbagbo is currently awaiting trial before the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity, most of his senior political and military allies are either in jail in Ivory Coast or in exile, many in Ghana.

Rotoworld: Week 4 fantasy football rankings

The NFL news cycle can be vicious. Less than 24 hours after throwing for 323 yards and a pair of scores against the league?s most imposing pass defense, Peyton Manning's arm strength was back in the news.

ESPN?s Ron Jaworski noted that Manning isn?t ?spinning it? like Aaron Rodgers or Matthew Stafford. This was hardly earth-shattering news, as Manning was never among the league?s rifle arms even in his prime.

The story sprouted more legs, however, when a veteran scout texted NFL Network?s Albert Breer to say, ?Peyton Manning can?t throw the ball anymore.? Wait, there?s more. As Breer delved deeper, the scout offered, "I would put my professional reputation on this -- he cannot throw with the velocity he could a couple years ago. He just can't. He's still as smart and accurate as anybody, he just can't sling it the way he used to." Another scout went on to voice the same opinion to Breer, stating that Manning?s arm is ?for sure, a lot weaker.?

I?m no scout, but I watched the game and Manning?s arm wasn?t exactly in pop-gun Pennington mode. If that arm was strong enough for a top-10 Week 3 fantasy finish against the Texans, it?s plenty sufficient to exploit a Raiders defense absolutely torn asunder by opposing aerial attacks. Oakland?s corners are so shabby that safety Mike Huff had to change positions, to "spectacularly bad" results versus the Steelers. Spinning or not, Manning is a must-start in Week 4.

Week 4 Quarterbacks

?

QB Notes: What to make of Rodgers? He hasn?t directed the Packers offense to 20 points in a game since last Christmas. Of course, the defenses of the Super Bowl winning Giants and this year?s 49ers, Bears and Seahawks has a lot to do with that. With his weapons intact and a potential shootout looming against a Saints defense that just allowed 510 total yards to the Chiefs, Rodgers is getting the benefit of the doubt this week. He gets the edge over Brees due solely to homefield advantage.

?

Stafford returned to practice Thursday and is on track to play against a Vikings defense that could be in a let-down game after playing over their heads against the 49ers. ? The Falcons-Panthers game could match the Packers-Saints for fireworks potential. It?s a big game for Newton?s fantasy outlook.

?

Playing without his top receiver for 11-of-12 quarters, Griffin has directed the Redskins to a league-high 99 points while averaging 404.3 yards per game. If you drafted RGIII as your backup, however, it may not be a great idea to shop your other quarterback. Griffin is on pace for 171 rushing attempts, which would shatter Michael Vick?s career-high of 123. Defenses are starting to sell out their ends, as evidenced by the eye-popping 28 times that Griffin went to the ground with contact against the Bengals. He?s taking a lot of punishment out of that pistol offense.

?

Fitzpatrick?s fantasy points have been inflated by a garbage-time Jets defense and two weak opponents. As NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell points out, only three of Fitzpatrick?s 86 pass attempts have traveled 19+ yards. He still has issues with ball placement. Sell high if you can. ? Schaub?s accuracy on deep and intermediate balls was pin-point versus Denver, but the Texans remain the run-heaviest team in the NFL. ? Look for Ponder?s fantasy production to rise with Jerome Simpson on board as a vertical threat.

?

Cutler has another tough matchup against a Dallas defense that has shut passing games down this season. ? Locker?s Week 3 stats were artificially inflated by a pair of fluky long touchdowns to Jared Cook and Nate Washington. He has a prohibitive matchup against J.J. Watt and Johnathan Joseph.

Week 4 Running Backs

RB Notes:
Ravens defensive boss Dick Jauron calls Rice ?one of the very best players in the league on the offensive side of the ball.? That?s been evident for awhile now, as Rice has emerged as the best all-around back in the game. He jumped off the tape against the Patriots, succeeding between the tackles, sustaining a rushing attack, getting to the corner, turning on a dime after the catch and excelling in pass protection. Rice has averaged 134 yards per in his last four games versus the Browns.

?

Jones-Drew draws a Bengals defense that has hemorrhaged 102 points in three games, with MLB Rey Maualuga forfeiting big plays at an alarming rate. ? Even on a surgically-repaired knee, Peterson still runs as violently as any back in the league. ? Mathews had a whopping eight targets in his debut. There aren?t more than a half-dozen backs I would take for the remainder of the season. ? NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell believes McFadden isn?t quite as explosive as he?s been the previous two seasons. The Raiders have passed the ball 128 times compared to just 44 rushing attempts for McFadden. Expect regression to the mean the rest of the way.
?

What was most impressive about Charles? career-high 288 yards wasn?t the 91-yard touchdown run. That was merely the most obvious example of the Saints? lack of speed on defense. It?s the 39 touches -- besting his previous career-high by a dozen -- that is most telling for fantasy value. With Peyton Hillis in a walking boot, Charles will see an increased role in the passing game versus the Chargers. ? Speaking of the Saints defense, no back has a better matchup this week than Benson. New Orleans has allowed the most rushing yards and the fantasy points to opposing running backs of any defense.
?

I?m not suggesting that Martin lacks job security, but it?s slightly disconcerting that LeGarrette Blount?s four runs last week were four of the most productive by the Bucs that game. Martin has yet to show an extra gear. ? Ridley?s playing time decreased in Week 3 simply because he?s not in the no-huddle personnel grouping. I would expect a bigger role against the Bills. ? Morris is the first Redskins back since Stephen Davis in 1999 to open the season with three consecutive games of 75+ rushing yards. He has that job on lockdown. ? McGahee felt good after Wednesday?s practice. All signs are positive thus far.

Matt Forte has been overly optimistic about his chances of playing Monday. Until we hear differently from the Bears, I?m assuming he sits one more week. Keep an eye on Bush?s shoulder, though. That injury kept him out of practice Wednesday. ? The other Bush missed practice with swelling and stiffness in his knee and could be a game-time decision. ? Leshoure has the look of a volume runner. Give him a week to see if he starts showing playmaking ability before considering a sell-high.
?

Ryan Williams has a window to take full control of the Cardinals backfield, but keep expectations in check. The Dolphins defense kills fantasy backs, and Williams has had just one good quarter in 12 this season. He looked great as a clock-killer in Week 3 versus a tired Eagles defense. ? This is one of the weeks to use Tate as a RB2 against a Titans defense that has been steamrolled by opposing backs. ? S-Jax wasn?t himself while playing through a groin injury last week. ? Until further notice, Bradshaw and Brown are splitting time.
?

Fred Jackson appeared to be further along than C.J. Spiller entering Wednesday, but the two could be trending in opposite directions. Check back Friday afternoon for an update on the Bills backfield. ? Jonathan Stewart admits his toe isn?t right. ? Greene and Powell have combined to average 3.1 YPC on first down.

Week 4 Wide Receivers

?

WR Notes: Calvin Johnson flat-out took over the game in the fourth quarter and overtime, making a series of acrobatic grabs in heavy traffic. It doesn?t feel like he?s truly exploded yet, but he has 58 more yards than the next-closest receiver. ? Speaking of which, Green is second in yards and first in fantasy points. His brilliant performance versus the Redskins could have been even more rewarding for fantasy owners had an 11-yard reverse not been stopped a foot shy of the end zone.

?

As we suspected before the season, Harvin is essentially slump proof. There?s no more electric NFL player in space, and coordinator Bill Musgrave is pulling out all the stops to get the ball in his hands after struggling as a play-caller in his Minnesota debut last season. Harvin leads the league in receptions and is second only to Brandon Myers in catch percentage. ? Don?t think Andre Johnson was lucky to reel in a 60-yard bomb from Matt Schaub last week. He got open deep downfield two other times. The first resulted in a drop on a perfectly placed ball, and the other was a near-catch in the end zone on the play that resulted in Schaub losing a portion of his ear to a vicious Joe Mays hit.

?

Play Thomas and Decker with confidence this week. The Raiders secondary is that bad, and both receivers are in the top-20 in targets. ? The Bills allow the fourth-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers, and the duo of Lloyd and Welker is coming off huge games in Week 3. ? Jordy Nelson is due to go off in a potential shootout with the Saints. I?d trust him more than Jennings, who is still not back to first-half 2011 form. ? Vincent Jackson has a dream matchup against a Redskins defense that has allowed 10 touchdown passes already.

?

Steve Smith has made the most of his four targets in each of the past two games. ? Dwayne Bowe, on the other hand, has been targeted at least 15 times in each of the past two weeks. ? Marshall has a daunting matchup against a Cowboys defense that used shadow corner Brandon Carr and essentially a box-in-one on Vincent Jackson last week. ? Dez Bryant doesn?t have a red zone target. That?s largely because only three teams have run fewer red zone plays than Dallas.? ? Since Week 11 of last season, the Eagles are 7-0 when Maclin plays and 0-3 when he sits.

?

Britt was targeted 11 times and just missed several plays. Matchups guru Evan Silva believes a breakout is coming, but it will likely have to wait a week with lockdown corner Johnathan Joseph in coverage Sunday. ? Holmes is averaging a healthy 11 targets per game. ? Denarius Moore has been Carson Palmer?s favorite target in the two games he?s played, averaging nine per. ? Sidney Rice had just one target in Week 3, as the Seahawks are clearly trying to hide their rookie quarterback. ? Alex Smith has only passed six times in the red zone, and his primary read there is Vernon Davis -- not Crabtree.

?

I wouldn?t hold out much hope for Garcon this week. If he sits, move Hankerson up a half-dozen spots. ? Jones and Cobb are flex-worthy this week in what projects as one of the highest-scoring games. ? Titus Young?s snap count skyrocketed in Week 3 because Tony Scheffler was out; the Lions ran fewer two-tight end sets. ? Barden will play a minor role with Hakeem Nicks due back. ? Kerley has yet to be targeted more than four times in a game.

Week 4 Tight Ends

?

TE Notes: Gronkowski averaged 7.75 targets per week under Bill O?Brien last season. He?s down to six per week under Josh McDaniels, largely because he spent the second half of the Ravens game doing nothing but blocking. Gronk remains a red-zone monster, but his consistency will suffer as McDaniels uses his parts differently this season.

?

The Chiefs have allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to tight ends through three weeks, and the Chargers figure to try to get Gates going after a disappointing output versus the Falcons. Gates? ribs looked fine last week. ? Vernon Davis is leading all tight ends in fantasy points; the Jets are without their best cover man. ? Finley leads the Packers in targets. If he can?t be trusted in a potential shootout with the Saints, you?re never going to use him.

?

Heath Miller, who leads all players in red-zone targets, is the only tight end with more than Martellus Bennett. ? Pitta is tied with Jimmy Graham for the tight-end target lead with 31. He?s here to stay as a TE1 option. ? Rudolph is Christian Ponder?s go-to guy in the end zone, to the point where a wide open Adrian Peterson was ignored on the tight end?s circus catch last week. The Lions have surrendered 15 receptions, 220 yards and 3 TDs to tight ends the past two weeks.

?

Witten?s problems have been related to rust and concentration. He?s getting open, just not catching the ball. ? Olsen?s 14 Week 3 targets are encouraging, but the matchup is tough this week. ? Cook is touch-and-go with a shoulder injury against the best defense in the league. ? Cameron is worth tracking to see if his role continues to expand, but he?s hardly trustworthy at Baltimore. ? Myers has velcro hands, but he?s not targeted heavily and doesn?t make plays after the catch.

Amazon launches Vine.com for eco-friendly shopping | Digital Trends

vine.com

Much to the delight of Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Amazon-owned Vine.com went live to the public this week.

Covered on the New York Times Bits blog earlier today, Amazon has launched a new site that only carries products that have a low impact on the?environment. Called Vine.com, the retailer stocks products that have such qualities as being reusable, organic or made from recycled products. Products could also be efficient in terms of energy or water usage as well as powered by a source of?renewable energy. For instance, the Bedol water-powered clock forgoes?batteries or electricity to display the current time. After filling the?water reservoir, electrodes convert ions into a current that can power the clock for up to three months. In addition, a memory chip keeps track of the time when the user needs to refill the water in the device.

bedol water powered clockInterestingly, Amazon?s brand?presence can?t be found anywhere on Vine.com. It?s also impossible to log into Vine.com using a preexisting Amazon username and password. The site is part of?the Quidsi network which operates other retail sites like pet shop Wag.com, baby shop?Diapers.com, health shop?Soap.com and toy shop?YoYo.com.

Amazon purchased the?Quidsi network during 2010 for just over half a billion dollars. That purchase was more than a year after Amazon purchased the popular footwear retailer Zappos. Other retailer?acquisitions?completed by Amazon include Shopbop and Woot.

There are a wide range of?environmentally friendly products on the new retail site including household cleaning items, baby products, health?supplements, housewares, tech gadgets, lawn care equipment, sports equipment and grocery items. Vine.com site leader Josh Dorfman stated ?This is a site that is not necessarily about saving the planet, though we feel the products are useful in that regard. It?s really saying to mom, ?If you care about raising safe and healthy kids and you feel green products without chemicals can help along the way, we?ve figured out ways to help you do that.??

organic oatmealRegarding the?environmental impact of running a sizable retail site with large fulfillment warehouses, Dorfman said ?It?s a fair point that no matter how you?re going to engage in commerce, there?s going to be an environmental impact. We?re not promising to be the greenest company right away, and we?re owning up to the fact that it?s not the way we operate across the entire company.?

Vine management has also reached out to all vendors that supply products for the site to make sure all products meet certain requirements before anything is listed for sale on Vine.com.

In order to appeal to people that want to support their immediate community, Vine.com has a section where the user can look for products being made within 100 miles of their city. By isolating the product search by city, shoppers can help out local businesses. As of right now, Vine.com offers twelve choices of location including Los Angeles, San?Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Denver, Chicago,?Milwaukee,?Minneapolis,?Raleigh, Boston,?Philadelphia?and New York City. ?Similar to other?Quidsi properties, Vine.com offers free one to two day delivery on all purchases over $49 and charges a $4.99 flat rate fee for shipping on orders less than $49.?

iCloud.com Using Google Maps - Business Insider

Despite Apple dropping Google Maps in iOS 6, iCloud.com is still using its mapping data to track down missing iPhones, iPads and laptops.

Buster Heine from Cult Of Mac discovered this via Reddit and we confirmed that iCloud.com does indeed still rely on Google Maps.

The Find My iPhone app doesn't use Google Maps, but rather data from TomTom and its other partners. Still, both maps correctly locate our test device.

How to explain four future Hall of Famers losing on same day? It's more than a fluke

AP file, Getty Images file, Reut

Sunday marked the first time Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees all lost on the same day.

ANALYSIS

By Scott Kacsmar

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 10:36 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2012

Despite scoring being as high as ever ? the average game has produced 47.6 points ? something is not right with the 2012 NFL season. It is not just the replacement referees either, though they have been a big factor.

Taking a look at the season's statistical quarterback leaders, you see a lot of the usual suspects in the top 10: the demoted Kevin Kolb, second-year players Andy Dalton and Christian Ponder, rookie Robert Griffin III, and the Harbaugh brothers? fearless leaders Alex Smith and Joe Flacco.

Wait. Is that a list of preseason leaders? Surely it cannot be the real thing? But it is. The quarterbacks we have expected elite performance from based on years of past success are not leading their teams to wins so far.

On Sunday, for the first time ever, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger all lost.

These four future Hall of Fame quarterbacks that we have grown accustomed to seeing wins are a combined 3-9 this season. That is as many wins as Kolb has contributed to the undefeated Cardinals. On Monday night, Aaron Rodgers also lost to join the 1-2 club.

It all adds up to a very awkward season in progress, one that lacks a dominant team or elite offense led by a star quarterback. Should this continue, you would have to go back a solid decade (2000-2002 era) to find a similar season.

What are the chances they all would lose in the same week?
That fact of the week may not be as impressive as it sounds when you consider one of these four quarterbacks is usually on a quest to perfection late into the season, or missed an entire season with injury (Tom Brady in 2008; Peyton Manning in 2011).

But Sunday marked the 73rd time all four played in the same NFL week, and the first time they went 0-4. It was the 58th time they all played without playing each other, so the real number to admire is one 0-4 week in 58 opportunities.

Maybe even just as crazy is that Week 2 was the first time they combined to go 1-3; their first losing week ever. The last time all four of their teams, with or without them starting, lost in the same week was another Week 3, back in the 2008 season. That day Rodgers also suffered his first loss as a starter against Dallas.

The 2004 season makes for a good bookmark in NFL history, as it was the year a lot of history-shaping events happened at the quarterback position.

Here is the breakdown of how the four have done in the 73 weeks they all played (since 2004).

Record Occurrences
4-0 16
3-1 34
3-1 (only loss to each other) 9
2-2 21
1-3 1 (Week 2, 2012)
0-4 1 (Week 3, 2012)

That season was when Manning took his game to an unprecedented level with 49 touchdown passes and a 121.1 passer rating. Brady had a breakout year statistically and won his third Super Bowl in four seasons. Brees finally rewarded San Diego with a career season to start an eight-year run of dominant play. Roethlisberger rewrote both the record books and expectations as the Steelers' rookie quarterback.

With respect to Rodgers and Eli Manning, these four have been the NFL?s gold standard at quarterback the last eight years, as no one else has the long track record of both individual and team success. Either Brady, Manning or Roethlisberger has represented the AFC in the Super Bowl in nine straight seasons. Losing streaks are not common for these four, but historic winning streaks are.

Roethlisberger became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a 13-0 record in the regular season, and he did it as a rookie in 2004. Peyton Manning did the same a year later; starting 13-0 with the 2005 Indianapolis Colts (finished 14-2). Brady achieved the only 16-0 regular season in NFL history with the 2007 New England Patriots. While Manning did it again in 2009 with a 14-0 start, Brees was right there with a 13-0 start for the New Orleans Saints (finished 13-3), which would lead to a Saints? Super Bowl victory.

Rodgers became the fifth quarterback to post a 13-0 regular season record last year (finished 14-1). Currently, Rodgers is suffering the greatest scoring drought of his career. Excluding return scores, the Packers have been held to 12, 16 and 16 points in their three games this season. They also scored only 20 points in their playoff loss to the Giants, putting Rodgers at 1-3 in his last four starts.

Since the other four quarterbacks ended their last season (2010 for Manning) with a playoff loss as well, you have some really bad records in the last few games.

What is going wrong this season?
Each of the four quarterbacks has faced a different situation that has led to their losing start.

Manning has likely faced the toughest start of the four quarterbacks. Not only has he had to deal with adjusting to a whole new team, but there is the physical recovery from the neck surgeries, and it is debatable just how healthy Manning is at this point.

On the field, the Broncos won a thrilling game over Pittsburgh in Week 1, but have dropped consecutive games to two 3-0 teams in Atlanta and Houston. After trailing by 20 points in the fourth quarter of each, Manning led a late rally, but the defense was unable to get the ball back for a legit opportunity at a winning touchdown.

The Broncos are a work in progress, but more rehab to get healthier and better timing with his receivers could help Manning get back to his usual standards. He had a slow start before, recovering after injury in 2008 that led to a 3-4 start before reeling off nine straight wins.

When you consider the 40-point scoring differential the Falcons and Texans each had in their other two wins this season, Denver?s 1-2 record with a pair of six-point losses does not look as bad. However, the schedule is still filled with challenges.

Brady could be sitting at 3-0 had field-goal attempts gone a little differently at the end of the game the last two weeks. First it was New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski missing on a 42-yard attempt that would have beat Arizona in Week 2, but he was wide left. It was the first failed clutch field goal in a loss for the Patriots since Dec. 26, 1999.

This time it was a blown 9-point lead in Baltimore in the fourth quarter. Brady was unsuccessful on the Patriots? last two drives, while the Ravens drove for the game-winning score. Rookie kicker Justin Tucker did not pull a Billy Cundiff this time, but he did barely make the 27-yard field goal with no time left.

Brady is trying to adjust to life without tight end Aaron Hernandez for the time being, and implementing vertical receiver Brandon Lloyd into an offense that's not known to stretch the field. Brady has been sacked seven times, and is on pace for his highest sack total since his first year as starter (41 times in 2001). The added pressure may explain why Brady has not looked as sharp this season.

The best news for New England is that they still play in the AFC East, and are the best team in the division. They have a good shot to notch a win over Buffalo this week, and now the New York Jets will be without Darrelle Revis the rest of the season. This is still New England?s division, even if they are under .500 for the first time in 145 games, snapping that impressive NFL record.

Brees is in a world of trouble at 0-3, and not playing like the prolific quarterback we are so used to seeing in New Orleans since 2006. While the suspension of head coach Sean Payton is a real problem, there is no excuse for Brees to rank 26th in completion percentage (54.7 percent), 27th in yards per attempt (6.60), and 25th in passer rating (77.0).

Brees should be able to wear a blindfold and still hit 60 percent of his passes in this offense, which he knows so well. New Orleans has major problems defensively, but the offense has not met its standard in any of the three games.

Brees struggled against a Washington defense that has been shredded by Sam Bradford and Andy Dalton. He threw a poor interception when he had a chance to tie the game late, and had a rookie-esque pick six against Carolina that contributed to the Week 2 loss.

It's even crazy for elite QBs

Kacsmar: Despite scoring as high as ever, something is not right this season. On Sunday, for the first time ever, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger all lost. And that's just ... nuts.
