Students at Bonham Elementary School will be the recipients of clothing donated to the Dress the Fir to Prevent the Burr Christmas Trees in the Richardson Library at Hardin-Simmons University. The trees are currently being decorated with bows, with donations from students, faculty, and staff to begin next Monday, November 12, 2012.
Elizabeth Worley, associate director for public services in the library, says they are calling the trees Sock Trees, but any donation of new winter items will be greatly appreciated.
Worley says, ?The library has been working for the past couple of years to reach out to students with events like the Easter egg hunts, the Halloween costume contest and flash mob, and the finals week play dough creations.?
?This year, when I was searching for an activity the library could do this fall semester, I came across the idea that has been done by a national honor society, gathering winter wear to decorate Christmas trees and donating it to a worthy cause,? says Worley.
The idea is really three-fold, ?It will help to warm some children this winter, it gets the students and campus involved in a project, and it will hopefully bring people into the library who may not come that often,? she says.
We contacted Bonham Elementary because we already have a longstanding relationship with the school, says Shannon Maynard, educational technology services coordinator for the library. ?The connection really started through the HSU Irvin School of Education,? says Maynard.
Shannon?s mom, Dr. Renee Collins, associate professor of education and chair of the HSU Department of Educational Studies, and her dad, Pastor Bob Collins, collaborated with Bonham?s administration and faculty/staff members during various community and family events on the campus.
Worley says Bonham fifth-graders came to HSU this past spring for a tour of the campus. ?When they came to the library, we talked to them about interesting resources in our library.?
Maynard says, ?It?s exciting that the Richardson Library is helping out with winter wear for the students!!! I hope everyone will help out and donate items so there is more than enough for everyone.
?The Richardson Library staff and possibly student workers will deliver the items on Thursday, December 13, 2012. The principal of Bonham and a few teachers have mentioned to me they plan to stop by the library to check out the trees and see what we have going on. They are also extremely excited about this event and want to donate items as well.?
The library will be accepting donations of new winter items for the Bonham students beginning Monday, November 12, and running until December 12.
